Now's the perfect age.
But as long as this child knows how to be safe online, which at 12,I'm sure he does.
I got my first laptop at 12,and lot of my friends got them earlier.
But now would probably be the perfect age.
As far as the parental controls go,if he is responsible then there's not really any need for them. I didn't have any on my laptops. But make sure he is responsible enough to know the dangers of the internet.

12 or 13 is way too young for a laptop, wait until 16 or 17 and only have one with some rules on how and where it's used. Never let the child take the laptop to school it will get lost or stolen. Make sure the child uses the computer where you the parent can supervise how the computer is used (never ever in their bedroom).

Hi!

I would say 15/16. Computer can be a good tool but I think reading a regular books are more important at this stage of the development then playing on computer. Most people can even do simple mathimatics in mind they need a calculator which very sad.
Even if you monitor child online activity if he smart enough he will find the way around Internet is great tool but not for kids.

Cheers, DS

Whenever you feel he is mature enough to have one. If he's responsible and you set a good set of rules up for his laptop useage then now would be a fine time to get him a laptop if not then just wait it out until your sure he's ready.

When his parents believe he is old enough to use it responsibly, and can afford it.

Also ensure internet access is controlled and monitored, some net monitoring software installed by an ADMIN account then give child only a user account so they cannot change stuff they should not.

I would say at least 16, but if you really trust him online, go ahead. My brother didn't get a laptop till he was 18.

I think you should surprise him on this 13th birthday. But if ou trust him, you can buy it now. I suggest it stays at home, because no matter HOW responsible he may be, dont let it outside the house! It might get stolen or damaged.
