VW has had a recall out on their brake light switch. If the brake light switch broke, it won't let you shift into gear.
To see if the brake light switch is broken, step on the brake pedal, and have someone go behind the car and see if the brake lights turn on. If they don't turn on, then the brake light switch is the most likely cause.
Call your local dealership with your VIN number and see if your car is covered under the recall.

Ask someone to stand in back of the car while you press the brake pedal. The brake lights should come on. If the lights don't come on, then you have a blown fuse and this will prevent the safety switch from allowing the car to be shifted out of park.
Even if the lights do come on, open up your fuse panel and check your fuses by pulling them out one at a time, checking to see if the metal piece inside is melted through, and if it's okay, pop it back in. If you come across one that's bad, replace it with a properly rated fuse (match the number on the new fuse to the number printed on the door to the fuse panel).
If all your fuses are okay, you'll probably need a tow and a mechanic. :-(

It sounds such as you're on the main suitable music with disarming this ridiculous risk-free practices. The vehicle needs to experience which you have your foot on the pedal to shift into equipment, so there's a brake change, which maximum possibly has a solenoid on the shifter....the two leaping the foot change, or removing the solenoid will artwork. I genuinely hate vw as they do no longer help their product contained in in the slightest degree; they have the silliest safeties etc. solid success

Turn on the key, step on the brake, and take it out of park. If the lever won't move, you don't have brake lights either, replace the blown fuse or get the switch fixed.

I agree with the blown fuse. Also you may have a slot by the shifter that will allow you to insert the key or something like it and manually release it until you can fix the fuse
