when i watch news about celebrities, i see these celebs almost get ran over and/or blinded by the paparazzi. the paparazzi would be all in their face and get mad if the celebs punch them or try to hide. i know if roles were reversed, they would hate it. can the paparazzi be put in jail for acting like that.

No, they can't. Federal law states you have no reasonable expectation of privacy while in public, so celebrities are fair game (as long as the Paparazzi are just taking pictures).

It's not illegal for a photographer to "do their job", even if that means taking it to the extreme. Surprisingly (or not, given how weird laws have become) it is the paparazzi who bring the majority of the lawsuits against celebrities, not the other way around. Whenever they get in the face of a famous person and quite literally force them to become defensive and abusive, the paparazzi ends up filing suit for assault It's ridiculous.

It is still a widely held belief that the pursuing paparazzi were a factor in Princess Dianas death, not the cause but definitely a factor. However, no one has been able to get anywhere with that one, not governments, not individuals. If the paparazzi can't be sued for contributing to the death of a princess then I would say they're pretty much immune.

So far the answers have only been about what happens in the USA.

There are varying laws in other countries, although generally it is not illegal for the paparazzi to take photos/do their job. Similarly, in most countries it is not illegal for a news photographer/professional photographer from taking photographs.

In some countries it is illegal for a non-professional photographer to take a photograph of a person, especially a female, without the persons permission (this applies in Australia and Britain).

Depending upon the country, there are restrictions on some areas that a newsman/photographer can take photos, i.e inside a police station, court-house, hospital --this applies in Australia and Britain.

The American legal system is designed to protect the rights of all members. Being rich or famous doesn't give you special rights. People have the right to take photographs in public places. If a celebrity wants to be in a public place, the PZZ have a right to take their photo. They also have to respect certain rights of their targets. For example, they cannot block their paths, make physical contact, threats, etc. I know that it can be frustrating to see, particularity when the celebrities are trying to have an afternoon out with their kids, but to make a law preventing them from doing what they do would also make it illegal for you to snap a picture of a famous person in an airport. So I don't expect to see too many anytime soon.

If you become famous, you have to realize what comes with it which would be people constantly taking your photograph and you can't sue them or do anything cause its part of the law. The only thing that you can do is sue someone for libel or slander, but you have to prove that it somehow hurt your character, which is hard to do since celebrities always have something bad published about them.
