I think that the party who promises to hold a referendum, on the EU treaty, will win the next election. I know TB did and then backed out but now he has gone its time for someone to stand up and be counted.

I think that Europe is not that big an election issue.

If it was, the tories would have won the last election.

I think that you are right when it comes to a party who promises a referendum winning at the next general election.

The tories are pressing for a referendum on the EU consitution. It makes sense that they will use it as an election issue. If the EU treaty is as bad as people fear it will be there will certainly be a move to let people vote. And that means, either a referendum, or voting for a party that leaves the EU.

The "promise" of a referendum on EU membership will be used as a smokescreen to divert attention from the other cr@p that any political Party never seems to want to address, and which - judging by posts made here - are of equally strong concern to the UK public: Immigration issues; the NHS; education; social services failings etc etc. Then, like, Blurghhh's bunch, they will find a legal means to back away from that promise. Besides, a referendum will be based on only two choices: Stay or Leave, neither of which will help the UK economy because we're in too deep already.

I think you're wrong. If the Liberal Democrats or Greens offered a referendum on an EU treaty, and the two bigger parties didn't, it still wouldn't be enough for either of them to take power.

The future of Britain within the EU is an important question for the next election, but I don't think it's going to be the sole deciding factor in who governs Britain next.

At the moment, that is more likely to be decided on the popularity of the leaders, and the failure of the Conservative party to offer any coherent policies.

I'm not sure that everyone realises the full implications of the EU Treaty/Constitution, so it would not be top of their list when voting. I do feel that Gordon Brown will not call an election till after ratification of the dreaded Treaty/Constitution,by which time it will not matter who we vote for,it will be too late. The EU will have FULL control over Britain,we will be left with a caretaker government who will just be implementing the EU's so called "law".People need to wake up and realise whats at stake...We must have a referendum!!!...

I'm afraid that if people did stand up to be counted, the vote might not go as you expect. For all your wishing to turn the clock back to some legendary time when England stood alone, it just ain't gonna happen.

Most of us now realise that the future of our country lies within the EU, so that we can influence the decisions being taken and enjoy the economic benefits.

For a long time in American history, various states refused to join the Union. You don't now see them wanting to pull out and go it alone, even if they are bigger and richer than Great Britain.

Anyway, you are entitled to use your democratic vote any way you please, but just realise that democracy means abiding by the decision of the majority.

No one is going to offer that including the Tories.
UKIP will but they have no chance of winning even a seat let alone the election and I have to say despite my dislike of the EU that the nutters running amok in UKIP make it completely unelectable, a protest vote yes but not a serious political party.

i agree, but even if they did have a referendum and we voted no, we would still be under european occupation and they would rehash everything and throw it back at us. the real victor
will be whoever establishesbritain as an independant nation.

Does ukip have a policy on the Iraq war? No, it's too busy fretting over Europe.
One trick ponies tend not to do well at elections.
