Some people keep a journal to leave behind for their children.
Jotting down events, weather, or what ever, or for themselves to read when their sitting in a nursing home or something.

I've been keeping one for more than 20 years on and off. If you write detailed passages when there is an event in your life you can actually feel, touch, hear, see what happened and how you felt right at that moment, no matter how long ago.
Other purposes? It lets you relieve stress, pour out your fears so they can be put in perspective later, you can say anything you like-- vent your frustrations-- and then get back to "reality." So in that way it can be very liberating and very healthy.
In yet another way, it can help recreate the past if you want to ever research things that happened earlier in your life. I'm in the middle of working on a biography, and if the subject had kept diaries, this would have been a much easier job! You can reason things out in a diary-- take the "what if" scenarios all the way to their conclusion. There are no rules, no one is judging-- it has endless possibilities.
Hope this helps!

There are many good things about writing one. First, it helps to recall things. I would write who I met at where and when I later find a person familiar, I can refer to it. Also, I have to access it everyday, so I never missed an event like whose birthdays and weddings and the date I met someone etc. I wont forget doctors appts and payment of bills because I put a reminder two days before the due dates. You may think what people do to us and what we went through unimportant but it is really useful. I once recently had to give a detailed account to evident the stalking and abuse of someone. Also, all the bits and pieces of money paid to me were easily available when I wanted to complile a debt list to my ex-employer. Another good thing is it lets us really pour out our emotions because in real, there is no human that you can really trust 100 pct. Everyone has some secrets. Ok, just for fun, can you remember the date and time and location you had your first @@@@@@? Well, I can find out mine. Hmmmmm...... its not just for looking back the past. Its the past information we need to refer to sometimes. Somethings I write in my own codes though, in case I die suddenly and my family reads my daily, my secrets are sure to be cremated or burried with me. Shhhhhhhhh.......

it depends on the person who is writing . That is mostly . if taken in the general context writing the diary serves u as a back up .
it will b a great friend who u can console on whatever the circumstance it is !!!!!!
so u will have a life long friend who will never betray u . it's the best thing as i see!!!!
other than that it will help u to see ur short-comings & ur strong points.
in other word it will b a good teacher 4 u to lead ur life well !!!
so go 4 it cos it's worth trying cos it does not do any harm to u
good luck

It's good to let yourself express what you've been feeling during the day. Lots of people start their diaries with "Dear Diary". Even if it's not to another person, telling it to the diary will help relieve any stress you may have accumulated during that day. For any stressful situation, it's always good to talk to someone about it, even if it's to a diary.

One thing is that it can help to put down the things that are bothering
you. If you are stressed out, write it out, it helps to see it on paper. If
you are having some kind of problem you don't want to share with anyone
else, write it out. It can give a whole new perspective on things. Good
luck.

If you're the kind who prefers to forget everything about the past, then yeah you don't need one
But not everyone wants to forget about the past. There are certain good times we tend to forget, its good to pen it down.
And then it's also good to write everything down when a person is having a tough day. It helps.
Again, this too isn't for everyone.

It helps some people to relieve stress and thought, it's kind of like talking to a therapist.
A diary will never tell anyone your secrets.
