The stories I usually enjoy are action/adventure stories, usually set in science fiction or fantasy (swords and sorcery) universes. Funny stories are also good. Some books I like include Lord of the Rings, The Two Faces of Tomorrow, Ringworld, Sabriel, Colossus and pretty much anything by Harry Harrison. I tend to dislike stories set in dystopian universes (such as The Diamond Age or The Difference Engine), although I do highly recommend George Orwell's 1984.
Your question didn't seem to be formulated very well, but I've done what I could. Hopefully that will give you an idea of the kinds of stories I like.

The stories I enjoy have a central character who gets in deep kimshi and gets out, growing as she does. Upbeat ending is a must.
Setting is important to attract a reader, but you have to have a believable character at the center of it all if you want them to finish the book and buy your next one.

Well, not aliens.
I love most things fantastical, but I prefer urban fantasy paralleled to the world I know (Tithe by Holly Black is a good example).
