We feed them outdoors and it doesn't take long for the ants to invade their bowls. I have heard of tape products. We have a 3 1/2 year old so need bio friendly product.

Try setting the bowls in a shallow pan (like a pie plate) full of water.

Also, you need to move the bowls around to different locations away from the ants, as well as making sure you don't leave them down for more than 15 minutes. Trainers say it isn't good to leave food out for your dog. Put the food down at the same times each day, wait 15 minutes and then remove it till the next feeding time.

Sprinkle "20 Mule Team Borax" (the laundry/cleaning powder) around the dog's dish and bedding area outside or inside, if needed. This is safe for your toddler and pet, but will cut the ants when they crawl across it. Someone told me this years ago when I had problems with my cat food in a college apartment with a bad ant problem. Was safe for the cat and really did create a border for the ants!

You can get citronella and wipe it in a circle about 1" away from the food bowl.
Though - some dogs can also be bothered by the smell :) Worth a shot, however.
