I read it a long time ago - and I really enjoyed it. I'd like for my 12 year old to read it (she reads at an 11th grade level) - but I can't remember if it was inappropriate for her age group or not. It's hard to tell with books - as they don't rate them like movies. We've just started to let her watch PG 13 movies (as she's a year ahead in school - and hangs out with mostly 13 year olds). Any info you could share would be very helpful!

I think you should wait until she has read the Heinlein young adult books first. Stranger in a Strange Land is a bit much for a 12 year old. While Stranger in a Strange Land doesn't have graphic sex, it does have a lot of unconventional ideas about sex since AIDS wasn't a problem when Heinlein wrote the book.

I am a librarian and a big science fiction fan. I just recently did a website on quality science fiction books for children and young adults.

If you want her to read a Heinlein book that is more appropriate for her age, there's Podkayne of Mars and The Rolling Stones, and Tunnel in the Sky as well. These are good books without adult situations in them. Stranger in a Strange Land would be good for her to read once she's in high school. I wouldn't let her read it just yet.

I don't think that there's anything in the book a mature 12-year-old couldn't handle. If she's allowed to see PG-13 movies, she can definitely handle Robert Heinlein.

Great book, but like all the other answers mentioned, it has a lot of sexual content. I would say no to a 12 year old reading it. Wait a few more years.

Heinlein tends to do a lot of implied sexuality in his books. Many of them are written for a 10th-11th grade level.

Consider not the level she can read at, but what maturity level she is at in terms of what themes she can handle.

It is a wonderful book, but perhaps best to introduce her to it a little later. You may wish to lead her in with say, "The Catcher in the Rye" by JD Salinger. It's not very long, and is excellently and touchingly narrated. There is not really sex in it as such, but rather the growing into an awareness of sex. It is the story of a young man growing up and into this world. I feel it may be very suitable for your daughter. It's very funny in places, and in other places it can make you want to cry.

NO. NOT NO, BUT HELL NO. That show is raunchy as hell, I used to watch it but it got too dirty. Chelsea sometimes says things about a lot of inappropriate topics. Perfect show for adults, perfect. 12? Put on some Teen Wolf or something along those lines.

There is quite a bit of sexual content and adult themes. I would consider young-adult books.

Except for the sexual angle, sure. The sex is frequent but not detailed.

IMHO, Heinlein's best work ever.
