I have a 1984 Honda Nighthawk S, the bike used to smoke a little bit of grey smoke at the begginning but now it blows out grey smoke all the time and alot of it. It also consumes oil at about a quart every 800 miles.

Is this the valve seals? Should I take it to a shop? Is it a problem that I should live with or will it get gradually worse?

Thanks.

The correct diagnostic procedure is to do a compression test, record your readings, then add an ounce of oil to each cylinder and perform the compression test again.

If the second set of readings are significantly higher than the first, the problem is rings, if not the problem is valves and/or valve seals.

Either way you are probably headed to a top end overhaul (cylinder head rebuild and new rings).

For cylinder head work, if you don't have anyone that does heads, I would suggest contacting joe hooper in Orlando FL at joehooper@cfl.rr.com. He has good pricing and is "bike experienced" as opposed to car head rebuilders.

Good luck with it.

You may want to take it in and get a rebuild on it. Either rings or valve seals are leaking. Let the bike mechanic make the call. The bike is 23 yrs old.

Good luck with it.

Well...it's already gotten gradually worse right? Not going to fix itself it seems. Take it to a shop and have a qualified technician tell you what it needs and if it would be worth it.
