I like the current efficient OUTBOARD motors. It is EASY to tell the difference. An outbaord motor is bolted to the transom of thboat, and the engiine and driveline is ONE unit, like a Mercury or Evinrude. It is like the motor on a fishing boat, only in larger sizes. On an Inboard, the motor is usually form a general engine maker, like Volvo or GM, and held WITHIN the bost. THen there is a drive system through the transom to the lower back of the boat. It all depends upon the application as to which is better for what purpose. Sometimes, twin or triple outboards can be found on professional ski-boats, like the ones used at Busch gardens. There is actually an outboard from Mercury that is TURBO-charged!!! Interesting, isn't it!

An outboard engine hangs off the rear of the boat.
An inboard engine is inside the boat and the drive goes through the transom.

Easiest is: an inboard boat motor is similar to a car engine, installed by the boat maker. An outboard boat motor is added on to the back of the boat and can be changed as you choose, more horsepower, etc. Inboards are generally faster and used on speedboats and for racing.

Outboard motors are wholly contained in and of themselves, and are then attached to the boat. You can see the whole motor. Inboard motors are built into the boat, and only the propellors can be seen from the outside. Ski boats and large cruiser or fishing boats have inboard motors.

I'm not a boat person. But, I thought an inboard was built into the boat. And, and outboard is the kind you hang off the boat such as a row boat or bass boat.

an outboard hangs on the transom (back of the boat) and an inboard sits inside the boat with the outdrive (same as transmission) goes through a hole in the transom.

outboard = everything sits outside the boat.....better for fishing, usually faster of the boats, unless its a full racing boat

inboard = the engine sits inside the boat and the drive train sits outside the boat...........better for water skiing and usually uses an automotive type engine......

If your boyfriend tried and did not succeed, you have two possibilities; look for another friend or stay away from boating.
