There is no set 'lifespan' for such a device. Since there are no moving parts, there is little wear. So, Yes, if you keep good care of it, it should last quite a while. There is no reason to believe that itw on't last your 4 years.

of course it depends what usb you use. but from my experience my usb lasted 3 years and still is working. the only thing that wont last is the updated versions of usb features and the size

It should last a long time. I have had the same one for 4 years. Its a Lexur from Wal-Mart.

There are no moving parts, so there is nothing to "wear out".
Assuming it doesn't break/get lost, then the most likely problem you will encounter will be needing more space as programs and files continue to get bigger.

built well, should last 10 years, but you will probably lose it first.
get a cord, maybe hang it on the wall.
