There are some on YA that keep saying the military is filled almost completely with conservatives. Now, while many join the military for patriotic and unselfish reasons there are three other reasons many people join and stay in, I now this from many, many years of personal experience.
a) they don't have the skill set to get a decent paying job so they join to learn a saleable skill.
b) need health care for their family because they can't afford it
c) want money for school because they can't afford to pay for it themselves.
Sounds a bit liberal to me.

I know there will be some losers who will sling mud at me, doesn't change the truth of my statement.
I am a huge supporter of our military, they need better pay and benefits. Most of you have never served either.

Very true. It's one of the disparities associated with an all-volunteer military. Those with the fewest means to quality higher education, a bad family life and the things you mentioned above join the military. Through my own military career I've seen many that fit into this demographic. It's led me to believe that the US was moving toward a caste system - those of lower income or a bad family environment make up the majority of the "military" class. I'm not advocating the draft - we've had enough problems with that - but maybe there's another way to make military or public service a mandatory thing for all people.

I won't sling mud here, but I would argue that joining the military for those three reasons is not necessarily a liberal idea.
Taking steps to become self reliant (learning a job skill, obtaining money for school) in exchange for hard work and sacrifice seems more conservative to me.
Even getting health insurance doesn't make it a liberal motivation...
Expecting the Government to provide those things (job training, school, insurance) without any work or effort on the part of the recipient, now THAT would be a liberal idea.

I agree, and on the subject of the money they get, it's a bloody disgrace, any money they get goes back to buying so much equipment, equipment that should be provided by the friggin government FREE, all the talk about bonus's for this and bonus's for that, they fail to mention the money will be spread out over years, military personal should also be exempt from paying tax of any kind, it's disgusting to think that they are fighting in the front lines for minimum wage.

Fact is that the military is indeed predominantly conservative. If you did any research on the demographics, you would see that the majority of those enlisting are from middle to upper middle class homes. The poor minority are vastly under represented. The skill sets learned in the Military are much higher than most of their civilian counterparts. In my profession there were two way in which to learn the craft. One was the Military and the other was years and years of OJT. There were no schools that provided that specialized training. It gives you the avenue you use so nonchalantly today. The Internet.
Do your research, you'll be glad you did.

You've hit the nail on the head. The fact that in the 2000 election Gore and the democrats tried to block the counting of absentee ballots from the military proves you right, not wrong.

I found the same reasons when I was in. Lots of guys came from low income families and didn't or couldn't go to school, lots of them got married young and had a kid or two so they needed a steady income and medical coverage.
