The anti-lock brake system on that year honda did not have a 'generic' way to test for codes on the ABS system nor did it have a way to shut the light out without using either a special honda ABS "checker box" or using the Honda PGM diagnostic tester.

If the ABS light is on there is a problem in the ABS system that will prevent the ABS system from working. It will not affect the normal brake system operation but you will not have the ABS function. the problem can be anything from a wheel speed sensor to the main ABS modulator.

You will have to take the car to a Honda dealer to find out whats wrong. whenever the light is on the system will store a diagnostic trouble code in the electronic control units memory. most dealers will charge about $40-50 to retrieve the code and tell you what it means. If the code indicates a part failure they can give you an estimate at that time to repair it. There may be additional diagnosis required based on what the check tells them. That diagnosis can add another $50 if they have to go further to isolate and confirm the cause.

Turning the light out without fixing the problem is not a solution. the light will simply come back on the next time the system does its self-test. The car runs the self-test each time you start the car and drive it.

Unfortunately, you'll have to pay to find out whats wrong and then you can make an educated decision as to whether or not you want to invest in the repair. Again, the brakes on the car will work as conventional brakes do while the ABS light is on. ABS provides benefit to you as a driver when you are on slick or icy roads or when you do a hard 'panic' stop. otherwise, you never use ABS

hope that answers your question

Call or go to a mechanic shop and ask! My husband has been a mechanic for 30 years and most shops will give you this info without charge. Try a shop that is like a mom and pop joint not a chain, that is where you will find your best mechanic's and good advice.

Blown fuse, bad wheel speed sensor or other problem.
