Another toddler is abused and killed while supposedly under watch for abuse.
Children beating to death a man who confronted them for vandalising his car.
Biker shot dead on the motorway.
Etc, Etc, Etc, Etc, Etc.

I have one question.
Why aren't the goverment doing anything about this?
The kids who killed that poor man are being tried in a youth court and will probably get a paid trip to disney land to help try and change their ways. Why aren't they up infront of a proper court and have the book thrown at them?
Why don't we have boot camps?
Why doesn't life mean life?

Murder isn't tried in a youth court.

I dont know about anyone esle but i knew what the difference between right and wrong were even from when i was about 2/3/4 years old. So why do youths get away with stuff they shouldn't. they know its wrong and they still do it-there is no excuse for it. My theory on escalating crime is that if there is no consequences, why should people care about their actions?? If you knew for certain that if you stole anythinm murdered anyone, tortured any1, u would go straight to jail and stay in 1 room for 23 hours a day and have only bread and water to survive......absolutly no1 would do it. It is purely becasue there is no consequences when people commit crime. All the government have to do is enforce some more punishments in more severe punishment too. Im sure the cost of crime is less than the cost to punish these people.

I think age should NOT be a deciding factor in the British Law system. They commited the crime, they should do the time. THAT'S IT!

Crime is something which is very hard to do something about. It all depends on which school of thought you follow - the short sharp shock school or the re-education school. The problem is neither seems to work very well. 200 years (or thereabouts) you could be executed for theft, yet that didn't stop people stealing. Yet educating and generally treating prisoners nicely and trying to reform them doesn't seem to do a lot of good either. Putting them all in prison for longer means more prisons (which nobody wants built on their doorstep) and a LOT more money. Prisons are very expensive, and justifying higher taxes is hard to do.

Personally I think a third way is required. First petty offenders get treated in a liberal way - re-education etc, repeat offenders and those convicted of serious crimes get long sentances with hard labour (whatever happened to that?) - digging ditches (which we need to stop flooding), building roads etc. Prisoners addicted to drugs are not released until they're clean.

Life sentancing will be abolished - you get say 80 or 100 years in prison - it's got to be a specific length of time rather than an ambiguous "life" which could mean 6 years.

Regardless of what happens, the prison system needs a LOT more money, time and effort spent on it.

offender management is big big business in the UK, unless you work in it you don't know this.

example(please research at your leisure): the same company that screwed up the systems for the tax credits is also now the company in charge of the IT infrastructure for the probation service (one problem though this has failed to and the same company has screwed up again) Makes you ask who is giving who the contracts from the government?

You see we like to think that we are not a corrupt country but we are just as bad as the rest of them and this is why these crimes will keep getting worse, it makes people money to keep these people out of prison. No its not a conspiracy its about big business money and how the government decided to spend our tax. All the crime figures are made up crime is much worse than is publicised.

life doesn't mean life because the public who pay the tax have no say. This country is not too soft just too corrupt- search who gets contracts and you will see for yourself don't take my word for it google it.

I have just finished a degree in sociology which is the study of society and crime is not rising it is one of the most common perceptions among people but believe me check out the stats and you will see that crime is falling believe me crime is not rising its just the stupid media that loves to sensationalise things do you think that 50 yrs ago no child abuse occurred? the difference now is the media is tring to sell news papers and stories please stop getting to upset it really isnt worth it of you want to do something then do something for your community dont sit around feeling bad or angry about it
Also did you know that most crime is committed by young men against young men???,NOT grannies as the media would have us believe, that is actually incredibly rare as they have no money for ppl to steal only pensions and no moble phones. Also cannabis use has fallen since 2003 please check out the stats theyre on the net these are simply examples that I can call to mind but there are many more go to the government websites
Remember Oliver Twist? London was FULL of crime back then it is NOT new phenomenon ppl have always committed crime the diff today is everyone knows about it

If you read the papers and watched TV you would know that crime is practically non existent now according to government statistics. Ever since the Dear Leader assured us ten years ago that he and his minions would be"Tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime" crime has virtually been eradicated according to government reports.
Please don't worry, Jacqui Smith has it all in hand and it's so safe now that sixteen year old 'Blunketts Bobbies can walk the streets in total safety.

We need to look at the American system. They are much tougher on offenders than we are in the UK. Some of their toughest jails truly are hell holes.

Perhaps making the punishment fit the crime might act as more of a deterrent.

All the fixes you quote happen AFTER the crime...
the time to prevent this is up to the parents and
guardians of the offenders . It's too late for this
group.

I'm just as sick at the escalating amount of draconian legislation that gets passed.

Keep the laws the same. Hire more cops. Allow citizens to carry arms, as is their right.

That will shut down crime.

Better question: where are these people's parents during their youth to teach them NOT to kill people?!
