He hated to throw such a fine sword into a lake as Arthur ordered. It was magic and thus unbreakable, and its scabbard protected one from bleeding to death. Bedivere hid it twice and told Arthur he had thrown it into the lake. Arthur knew better, so he threatened to arise and kill Bedivere if he did not do as ordered. When the sword was thrown into the lake, Nyneve, the Lady of the Lake, and 2 more sorceresses came to take Arthur to Avalon.

any who wielded caliburn would never be defeated. a great temptation for a knight. either that or he noticed a girl swimming in the water and didnt want to scuwer her :)
