The latex balloons will hold in larger oxygen and nitrogen molecules but smaller helium (or hydrogen) molecules will worm their way out. Mylar balloons (the shiny foil-like ones, sometimes tinted different colours) are not permeable to helium or hydrogen and should last longer. If the balloons were of the same type, it could have been a tiny flaw in a balloon, or perhaps the balloon was not sealed tightly at its opening.

P.S.: I have a balloon which is over 20 years old. It's a pathetic little thing, I keep it in a light-bulb box.

P.P.S.: Please dispose of balloons properly. Some animals will try to eat broken balloons and cause themselves great discomfort.

If its helium filled then the problem is that many materials - especially latex - are porous to helium. This is made much worse by the presence of finger prints. This could be the difference.

Sometimes the balloon is a little leaky and hence the gas escapes.
