Decent area to live is Gosforth (pronounced Gosfuth), The Big Market for party time, loads of cinema screens. Freshers week is well worth it. Town centre and the Metro Centre for shopping. Buses and the metro for travel (yes it is an underground). Everything (mostly) is within the city centre. Northumberland and the coast for great walks. The women are the best. Newcastle Brown Ale (in a 1/2 pint glass), a cheese stottie (massive bap), And St James' Park. The Geordie Mecca!!
You'll love it.

The university will provide a pack which will answer all the questions that you asked.
In short, Newcastle is a fantastic place to be, great bars, restaurants, easy travel on the metro, surrounded by great countryside, near the coast and a world class football team, what more could you want!

The Metro is the fastest way around the city centre, and quite cheap.I park at the hotel and use the taxi service there, it's easier than trying to park your car.I find the music scene there amazing.I travel from South Wales just to get to gigs it's that good there.I have lots of Geordie mates, and they warn me of some of the areas that get rough at weekends (same as most big cities I suppose)
There are plenty of good bars and restaurants to choose from.Your son will probably just follow his mates around anyway.
Take a look at this link, lots of good information on the left hand side of the screen for you:

contrary to popular belief. N/C is a friendly & safe place there are too many accomodations to mention most are around the city centre & are modern, there has been alot of new builds for the purpose of the student accomodation...the quay side is nice for a friendly drink ,avoid the bigg market on weekends fri/sat/sun...the rest of the week is okay quet & cheap drinks, hed be better off sticking with the student bars (too many to list)...transport is not a problem......he`ll love Newcastle & will make it his second home....good luck

I live near Newcastle, dont listen to anyone elses bad comments!
Stay away from the Bigg Market please, it is really rough.
Head down to the Train station, the bars there are cool. Also vsit The Gate, there are some cool bars there too, and also a Cinema.
The weather can be pretty naff, but the down to earth people will cheer you up!!! XXX
