I tip for service. If it is a to go order, I do not consider that to be service. Walking out the door to hand me a bag is not anywhere near the service that I expect when I am seated in a restaurant! If I do tip the to go person, it is only the change (under a dollar or two) from the order!

Great question! I have two daughters who work at an Applebee's, a server and a bartender. I asked them this same question. They told me Yes, you should tip a carside person. They are responsible for taking your order, packaging(bagging), and delivering. Although, 10% should be enough because they usually make more per hour.
Many people don't realize that waitresses/servers generally make around $2/hr and you should tip 15%-20% depending on the service. And everyone should remember that a server can't control the kitchen, so don't take out on the server a bad meal from the kitchen. Speak to the manager, but remember to tip the server for the service, not the food. Last thing, the server you get still has to "tip out" the bartender and sometimes the host/hostess who seats you. So the tip you gave them has to be split between a few, and that tip is generally the only pay they get since taxes comes out of the $2/hr they make.

I consider it proper to tip for this altough when I worked in restaurant to my shock a manager said most people do not tip for carry out..I think they should at least 10 percent. As someone said on the message boards it is alot more work to load it all up make sure conidments are there etc.
I will not tip for subway, mcdonalds etc..these people who just stick a tip jar out are not being taxed on it and are being paid minimum wage.Which isnt really fair for the other people who are only being paid 2.13 and most of those are single moms trying to rasie a kid on that salary they do not realize you are taxed on it even if you do not tip.the government assumes the people did tip you appropraitely.I get so mad with the people who have never been taught how to tip properly. My bro in law always left a dollar no matter what the bill was!!I would go behind and tip cause its embarrasment to be around someone who doesnt know how to tip.I have even had some very poor service and i still tip...maybe not the 20 percent but at least 15 ..cause i feel guilty for them having to pay taxes on what i ate....and the govt assumed i tipped them.
It's amazing the people who have waited tables before tend to be your best tippers.
Learn how to tip america!!!!

In the restaurant I work at, the cashier still gets everything together (soup, salads, breads, dessert, beverages) and bags everything up to look nice. They are responsible for placing condiments and extra napkins and utensils in the bag. And most people seem to think "to go" means "right now" and don't understand that a well done sirloin is not going to be ready 3 minutes after they order it. Of course, the smart thing for these rushed people would be to call ahead and place their order, but most never do. The cashier deals with a lot more crap then I, as a server, ever does. I would tip them 10%-15%, depends on the level of service they gave you and if it was given with a pleasant attitude.
Kyle, do me a favor and not be such an idiot. If you've never served a day in your life, kindly shut up. Your lack of knowledge and understanding kills me.

Not necessarily as it is a to-go order. Since they are providing a little extra service, a small tip would be considerate, especially if it's a large order- like 5-10 percent.

Yes it is. They write down the order, ring it up, and prepare/bag everything. They have to get your salads, your soups, your condiments, your plasticware, your napkins, your drinks, along with 15-20 other orders all at once. It is stressful and often customers arrive at the most inconvient times or all at once and it is very hard on the person doing the carside's. Leave at least 10-15% or $5 for these if it's less than $50.

Where I work, we the servers do all of the carryout. There is no designated person, and although we do not expect it, a tip is appreciated. The person who answers the phone is the one who does everything concerning the order

I wouldn't tip when I'm in that situation at all, that's what they're paid to do. It could be considered a drive thru of sorts. Think of it this way, do you tip the McDonalds worker when they have to go outside and give you your food? I know that has happened to more people than me.
