Navy is one of those colors that can go well with just about anything.
Since you don't want white- and I can understand, since white is hard to keep clean- perhaps a nice light beige or green? Or a darker maroon, green, or brown if you're trying for a 'solid' kind of look. But don't use the darker colors if you have a small room.
Good luck!

I personally like the idea of a white headboard with a navy blue comforter BUT, if your set on changing that, how about a powder blue or antiqued washed blue head and footboard?

I'm not sure how your headboard is designed but I covered my headboard and footboard with material. It's pretty simple to do and can be done by padding it with batting material then cover it with the material that goes with your comforter. I secured mine using a staple gun. It's nice cause you can match the curtains, a chair, etc. all to the same material. (A more inexpensive way would be to use cotton sheets instead of material). But if you really prefer to paint I would look into fleck stone, it gives it a stone finish and is multi-colored to go with a solid colored comforter.

I, too, prefer white, but if I had to choose another color, I would go with black. If you should ever decide to go with another comforter/color, you won't have to worry about repainting.
Despite what the first poster said, a lot of the old metal beds are not made of brass, but just metal. That being said, make sure you prime the bed before painting with a primer made for metal.

chocolate brown would be a good choice.
if the bed is old, you may want to strip it. old metal beds are usually solid brass and are worth the effort of stripping.
