Okay, maybe this isn't the right board for this, but I didn't know where to post it.
There have been a lot of instances in my area lately where graveyards have been vandalized, usually by knocking down tombstones, sometimes by graffiti on tombstones.
I've just always wondered, why do people do that? What is the fun in it? What do they gain? Also, how do they get away with it without someone seeing them? In some of the instances there were over 100 tombstones knocked over--I could see getting away with knocking down one or two without someone seeing, but over 100?

I am not sure why people do this. I can remember as a kid, being taught to respect cemeteries. I would have gotten my butt busted if I showed ANY disrespect for the dead while in one.
I can also remember my family and I, visiting our family cemetery one day shortly after my two young cousins had been killed in a car accident only to find that a number of the graves, some dating back further then the history of my home town had been violated. You could see the tire marks from the vehicle(s) that had been used to pull over the grave stones. It was very disturbing even to a child of 11.
My cousins' graves had not been left undisturbed either. I can not imagine what was going through those young men's(they were caught a couple weeks later at another grave yard) minds as they attached the chain to the tombstone of an 8 year old boy and 3 year old girl, only gone from this earth for a few weeks, and ripped it down.
It is sickening to think of. These types of people must be extremely emotionally disturbed or in very bad need of attention/discipline.
I sincerly hope that the sick people that are doing this in your area are caught and brought to justice before they do too much more damage!

The kids are just ignorant and disrespectful to the dead. It makes me angry to see it done, I live near a graveyard and almost every morning there is a new tombstone knocked over. I have no clue how 100 could get knocked over though. They must have had like 20 people helping them.

We had this happen years ago up my way too. It was a bunch of kids out partying, who thought it would be cool to knock them over. And, depending on where it is located, it would be easy to do it and get away with it, as not all are located next to homes. The one I am thinking of was well back enough that no one would notice until the next day.

properly i'm an Atheist and that i can particularly say that I particularly have in no way knocked down a tombstone in my existence, nor have I ever had the urge to. So i'm afraid i don't somewhat understand your question. lol.

They do not get away with it. The ones the tombstones are a memorial for will compensate them for what they did accordingly.

This is really makes me mad, and I'm not sure what to do about this it's an ongoing problem everywhere. Kids do not know right from wrong because their parents can't be bothered to teach them no respect for others or anything personal property.

Sounds like a bunch of bored, drunk kids, with no respect for the dead.

Whoever would do that has never lost someone who is close to them and has to go to the cemetery to visit their grave. But one day they will and they will be sorry.

If there is one thing that has always proven to be true is that the truth will come out and they will be caught... It may have been a fun thing for them to do... But their ending by getting caught in the act will not be one iota of fun for them...............................................................................................
