Birds don't eat asphalt but neither do insects. The birds are after the small rocks that their digestive system needs to grind and process seeds and other hard food.
Several methods of keeping them away are available-noise makers, fake owls etc. Check in the garden section of your local dept. store.

I'd say if you have birds pecking into your shingles you may have some sort of inscet infestation. Birds don't eat asphalt.
I'd have the roof looked at by someone that can tell just in case. Something other then the shingles is attracting birds.

Try pouring some ammonia on the places they are pecking. or try to find out what type of birds they are and getting a bird distress tape to play for them. We just did this with starlings, (borrowed cassette tape from conservation dept) and it has worked so far (two weeks now)
