wikipedia gives a pretty good general list of emo bands...though I believe some simply get labeled emo by their fans

MCR is not emo, for years they have simply labeled themselves as a Rock band, but due to fans they are seen as emo
while Fall out boy has actually said that they are emo
also, just because HIM has love songs does not mean that they are emo

i dont like the whole emo thing that is going on right now, i find it to be just another stupid style/fad that is going around just so fans can feel important or something.
im not emo. but i listen to taking back sunday, my chemical romance, and 30 seconds to mars - all of which are labeled emo - but i dont do the emo crap most fans do, i just like their music because they have good talent, great guitar riffs, and a sound thats worth listening to

woahhh a lot of these people have no idea what they are talking about... this question is sooo stereotypical. Technically anything with emotion could be considered 'emo'. Personally i am not what people refer to as 'emo', but from what i can see many people misunderstand what it means. I would say that that My Chemical Romance has a large fan base who would be considered 'emo', but also a large fan base who are not emo at all. They are considered a rock/metal band. Also I would not consider Fall out Boy to be 'emo'. They are clearly more scene, although they personally consider themselves to be 'Pop Punk'. I really don't like when people put labels on music. The whole idea behind this genre of music is breaking free of these stereotypes. Music should not be judged by the genre it falls into but rather upon personal taste as the genre can often differ between how a person interprets the music. Most music falls into a couple different genres and should not be tied down to one specific type such as the vague term 'emo'.

Emo bands:

Fall Out Boy
Panic! At The Disco
The Rites Of Spring (1st emo band)
Hawthorne Heights
Mineral
Dashboard Confessional
Jimmy Eat World
Sunny Day Real Estate
From Autumn To Ashes
AFI
My Chemical Romance
The Used
Death Cab for Cutie
From First to Last
Fugazi
Paramore
Senses Fail
Something Corporate
Taking Back Sunday
Thursday

Alot of people say that Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco and some of those other bands I mentioned aren't emo. Honestly I think the only reason people say that is because the original fans of emo don't like the fact that emo is mainstream now so they don't call the popular emo bands emo. Another thing is people call MCR just "Rock", but rock isn't really a genre, it's an umbrella term for thousands of genres including punk, metal, grunge, goth, garage, hardcore punk, metalcore, shoegaze, thrash ect.

In my opinion:

Jimmy Eat World, Sunny Day Real Estate, Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, and Hawthorne Heights are considered emo.

This song is a good example of emo music, I mean the title alone tells it all "Cute without the E" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JduO4OGZKY8&mode=related&search=

My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Panic! At the Disco are not emo bands, but tend to get lumped into that category. They are just modern alternative rock, it's that simple.
HIM is definitely not an emo band, nowhere close.

Ok you got alot of answers to read through here.
And to clear this up.
Underoath is not Emo! They are heavy christian rock.
I'm not going to give you a big list to read through.
The poster children for Emo music is:

Hawthorne Heights

They are basicly what broke out the whole sad "I want you to love me back" thing. I mean comeone. The stereo-type for emo is cutting wrists. And with lyrics like "Cut my wrists and black my eyes" how can you get more "Emo" Even though this started ages ago it didn't really have a name until this year.

Tears for fears *coughs*

I remember it starting with Jeff Buckley, though it was different and more intellectual then. Now that the masses have taken hold of the movement Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco are considered emo.

For the record this is pop music mass marketed to the current crop of emos. The scene jumped the shark years ago.

Emo is not bad....shut up with the stupid labelling and judging.

Well, some bands dont think they're emo, but are still called emo, like My Chemical Romance or Fall Out Boy.

And HIM aren't emo. They're more goth metal.

Taking Back Sunday is emo...Aiden...they rock, though....Panic! At The Disco too, i guess.

Emo is a genre that developed in the '80s from punk rock.
You will never hear any authentic "emo" kid mention Taking Back Sunday or Dashboard Confessional.
