Glad to see a question being asked on here to go along with the "National Conversation" White Paper. I dear say though, that BBC One "UK National News" will not report much, or indeed at all on this matter - take yesterday for example, the two Scottish stores were either a poisoned bird, or a Two year old daft film which really meant nothing, other than a joke.

Your first statement may wash down with some English people, but the Barnet Formula gives us 10 billion approx. a year extra - Funny that the Scottish Oil Revenues gives the UK Parliament more, which fails to come back to Holyrood. Other taxes also have the same fate. Who is really subsidising who here... But forget about that for now...

There is, for now, no real major chance in the SNP minority Government getting a Referendum with the question: "Should Scotland negotiate with the UK Parliament for full Independence?" What is more likely, for now, is "Should Scotland negotiate for more powers in a Devolved Scotland?" This, for now is looking the only way to get the Conservatives and the Lib Dems on board, weather Labour decides that it too wants more powers, we will just have to wait and see, again it is looking if they do.

It's funny though that the three parties in Holyrood "Joining Forces" to block a Full Independence Bill have their Parent parties in Westminster?
Scottish Labour, Conservatives, and Lib Dems are not convinced with Independence, OK their choice, but why do they have to make the decision for the people that Elected them? Poll after Poll has showed tat the people of Scotland are in favour of a referendum - up to 80%!
Have the Referendum and then see where it takes us. You would think that the Unionist parties would wish to see a referendum - they keep saying, "The people of Scotland do not wish Independence!" THEN let us decide... You have not been elected to think for us. You have been elected to Listen for us! And lets just say that the majority of Scots say Nutt for an Independent Scotland - wont that give the Unionist parties major ammo against the SNP? I would think so...
It seems to me that the Unionist parties are completely scared at the thought of a Referendum, as they know that it could go either way. OK recent Polls have showed the number of Scots wishing independence at 39%, (and a further large % undecided) when only in January it was 51%, but these are only Polls, the real Poll comes with a Referendum where Everyone gets a chance to vote!

I want Scotland to be independent as like yourself, I think we would be all the better for it. We have 30 years to put in place an economy that will work for the long term future of Scotland. those that keep reminding us that the North Sea oil only has 30 years left, are right, but isn’t that a good thing? We then have so many years to change Scotland for the better! Scotland is the best country in the Western Europe for renewable energy - new technologies will surely give Scotland the boost. Scotland has a wealth of opportunities to explore within 30 years.

Just speaking of North Sea Oil - We are the only Country that has allowed our Oik Wealth leave us without a fight.

By what i have read of Some of the above answers, many saying that we in Scotland "hate the English," then why have some of the answers showed an isolated attitude to Scotland? Many are too quick to judge others, than judge themselves.

I see no reason why Scotland cannot remain in the Commonwealth after, Independence, as it is brilliant trading block. As long as we all remain with strong trading links, no one will lose out. Scotland has to get its way into the EU also; weather Scotland will automatically get in, or have to apply is unknown yet. Weather the remainder of Britain will have to reapply, again I am unsure. But (If looking at other answers on here, which many English people believe by getting rid of Scot MPs in Westminster, will somehow stop any future Labour Government, and see a Tory strong hold in Westminster) then the remainder can say No we do not want in the EU as it will always be “Tory Government"

If Ireland, a similar size to Scotland, with a similar size of population can be one if the the richest countries per hear in the world, with no where near the natural resources of that of Scotland - with the right tax systems, and a brilliant economic structure, Scotland can surely out do Ireland.

So really what have we both got to lose?

Calum seems a genuine enough bloke and very much a true Scot. I sympathise, because the true Scots are often let down by the hypocritical ones who rave on about how wonderful Scotland is, whilst living in the wealthy south of England (Billy Connolly is a good example, as is Rod Stewart - has Rod ever actually been to Scotland, apart from when he wants a VIP match ticket for Hampden?). It's a bit like the Liverpool syndrome - "it's a great place", say Jimmy Tarbuck and Cilla Black from Berkshire. I love Scotland and I'm English, but if they want it for themselves they need more genuine supporters, like Calum, not the two-faced so-and-so's mentioned above.

Actually you raise a good point. Remember in 1603 it was a Scots king that brought the crowns together, and it was a bribe of £12,500 that saw the Act of Union signed in 1707, so in reality, the people never actaully asked to be part of a soverignty both north and south of the border.

The vote will not be ratified as the SNP do not carry a majority that would see this bill passed

While we are at it, we will take back the disputed lands of Cumbria and Northumbria which we ruled, and were never actually given back.

As long as we are talking about taking everything back does that mean the 30% of the water supplied to you, we can sell elsewhere for money. Also the wind farms that e-on are advertising, are they in the Thames.

Again as long as we are separating can all the Englundshire absentee landlords give back the land they took.

Scottish industry would be delighted to herald back all the captains of industry based down south.

I agree that we should give Englundshire their independence and take back the millions of Poll Tax/ Community Charge, that seeps into the Palaces of Westminster.

We would be rid of Tories; no more LIbDems, no BNP. Jings the picture just gets brighter all the time.

With the water levels dropping like a stone, even with all the floods, as you have an artesian system, does that mean that we can charge the earth for bottled water.

Look on the bright side, think of all the European monies we would receive from the Euro Parliament.

Also your cattle would not be allowed to graze on Scottish land so you would not be able to get the premium mark for your Angus cattle.

You asked a serious question, and I am replying to the invective of those answering on behalf of stupidity.

I think independence will happen, but whether those here care to believe me or not, removing all the Scots invloved in British industry, would not help either of our cases.

I feel that England deserve their indepence from us as much as we do from them, but until the economics (modern economics, check the back of the new £20 note) can be sorted, it will never happen.

Also if you have apologised for slavery, will you apologise for the Highland Clearances, as that was tantamount to genocide.

EDIT

To old know all you missed out a word in your moniker. The reigning monarch is German/ English by descent, the fact that the crown have a tartan that no one can can wear or it is deemed treasonous shows what you really know about the crown.

And see your Lord of the Isles, tell him to give it back in all. But seeing as you know all about it, why not hook up with the Duke of Cornwall and ask him about it.

There is so much anti-English racist hate from a lot (not all) of Scottish people i just think have a Scottish referendum and go ahead. Off the top of my head i think there are just over 5million people in Scotland, just less than 50 million in England and less than 3 million in Wales (correct me if i`m wrong).
There are so many considerations though and to say that England takes taxes from a population of 5mill is incorrect, the reverse is true, there has been massive amounts of funding from the British parliament to Scotland which is disproportionate to the amount of the population.
Another consideration is defence, i don`t have to tell anyone that the future of the world is going to be unstable with the power shift to countries like China. Scotland would have a much reduced forces wouldn`t we all be better off having four countries together militarily.
I have heard it said that the terrorists have the problem with England not Scotland but do you really believe that in the eyes of these nutters they differentiate between us. They believe that anyone who is not Muslim is the enemy.
I`m sorry that there is so much anti-English feeling in Scotland, a beautiful place where i spent most of my childhood holidays.
But forget the past now, it was our ancestors not us, your true enemies in the future will not be the English, i promise you.

I'm Welsh so it doesn't bother me whether Scotland is independent or not - it doesn't affect me.

I think its a shame to break up the UK but there you go.

I'd prefer Wales to stay in the UK

Willygromit don't talk shite the English government has never raped me. Please don't think you can speak for Wales. And I like the Royals. God bless the Prince of Wales.

Oh sorry did I pish on your little Celtic Pride bonfire? So sorry. We're not all anti-English ranters.

I agree, let Scotland rule itself. Maybe then the Scots will learn tolerance and forgiveness, and truly grow up as a proud nation once and for all.

FCS, they are still going on about stuff that happened hundreds of years ago!

Yes. :-)

"Since 1975 some £120bn ($180bn) of Scottish oil revenue has flowed to the London Treasury. Meanwhile some 30% of Scots live in cold damp housing, below the official European Union poverty line. It is a disgrace. Scotland is the most energy rich country in Europe, yet is probably the only country to discover oil and get poorer."

I agree Calum. Scotland should be granted it's full independence from England. After what the English have done to the Scots over the centuries, it's the very least they could do to grant Scotland independence.

Yes we Scots should have our country back but the bigwigs in west minster will not let that happen as long as the 90% of the oil produced in the UK comes through Scotland and most of the taxes paid in the country head down south too.

The English government is still raping Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland for all that they can get and we get the royal family in return aren't we dam lucky.
