Why do so many people justify doing things that are known to be dangerous-i.e. smoking while pregnant, inducing labor with castor oil, etc.-by saying "I smoked the whole nine months and my baby was fine" or "it worked for a friend and they had no problems".

I liken it to saying "My friend drove 100 MPH down the dirt road and crashed into a tree, but survived. I will be fine if I do the same thing" or "I ate that mayonnaise sandwhich that was left in the car all day with temperatures reaching 120 and did not get food poisoning, so neither will you".

You and/or your friend may have been lucky, but why take the risk when it comes to your child's health?

Are you alive, people have choices to do what ever they want, you might not agree with what they do but there will come a time when you do something silly and people will think the same of you. So just enjoy your own life, live for the moment but live responsibly and stop worrying about other peoples lives and choices.

Occasional smoking a cigarette while pregnant will not hurt the baby its chain smoking and daily smoking to worry about. I hate it when people try and tell other people how to take care of themselves. You are not them so leave them be. Mothers have been having children since the beginning of time and the world is still very well populated isn't it? There are tons of safety concerns today that 20 year ago no one ever thought of yet you still got here and so did your friends and strangers. Its their body and their baby. Drinking causes fetal alcohol syndrome if over used but even a doctor will tell you one drink every now and then wont hurt the baby. Its constant use that is the problem and any doctor will tell you that. You are not watching the person 24/7 and it wouldn't be your right to do so since its not your body or your baby so you don't know what they may be doing. I drink caffeine all the time while pregnant and was actually told to by my doctor because without it I had constant headaches that caused me stress and put the baby in stress as well. Your not them so just back off.

Some people are just irresponsible. Or invincible (sp??). Its like having unprotected sex and saying "Could I be pregnant?" or worse "Could I have HIV?" We live in a culture that thrives on the moment, I wanna feel good right now with no consequences. Thats not the real world and I feel sad for the people who are like that. Not me--if anything I am hypersensitive about consequences and drive myself crazy trying to think of all the possible senarios....of corse thats a different question, but I digress.

Because some people are just ignorant of the truth or just really do not care about their child in the way they say they do.

Some women are irresponsible during their pregnancy. Those women who smoke, drink, do drugs, and other things that they know could potentially harm the unborn fetus, are not quite fit and ready to be mothers.

because no one ever thinks it will happen to them..like when you watch a movie and see things happen, you say "na that could never happen in real life" so they go ahead and do it

Because everyone has the right to make their own choices and decisions, regardless of what you think is right or wrong. You can't tell someone not to do something; they have to learn for themselves.
