scientifically they are just figments of your imagination which are very much a psychological niche.
It really depends on individuals and how they perceive image or non-image which will feed back to your brain.
So basically if you make yourself believe something is there then your mind will adjust to that thought and conjure up a whole load of information pieced together from experiences in your life to bring a ghost to your eyes.
It may be a horror movie you saw last week or your late grandmother. Ghosts are not much different to dreams.

They are imprints left behind after someone is dead. That is one theory. Some say when A person dies they leave behind certain aspects of their past lives. IE; When they did something important like dying! That is why we usually see them near or at the place they died.
They are not necessarily whitish, but you may be talking about orbs, which is the most common way the entity makes its presence known. They are small balls of light created by the energy of the ghost, based on how powerful an imprint it left behind. It is rare to see Ghosts as they actually are with the naked eye. It is easier to see when using photography equipment. They are cold because they are dead.
They have no blood, or heartbeat, and hence no bloodflow. They cannot feel either physically or emotionally (unless you are a poltergeist!) This is why they are cold.
Most ghosts have no "unfinished business" that is all Blarney as they say. Sometimes they can be projections of an exceptionally powerful imagination, a sort of mass hypnotism.
If someone says they see a ghost, and they sound persuasive, then you believe them, and "see" what is not there. However, Sometimes You actually do see them, but not all white, but rather as mist or fog.
Hope this helped. I have ghosts in my bedroom, and I can see them sometimes.

It was explained to me once in a sermon that made more sense than anything else I've come across. Ghosts are actually demons. Not just any demon but the one that identified with you while you were still alive. It is not stated anywhere in the Bible persay, as my Pastor pointed out, at least not obivious, like "Jesus wept." But it does say that you will haave a guardian watching over you, guardian angel, if you will. Why would you need a guardian angel assigned to you, maybe because you already have a demon harassing you.
He also stated that it was his belief that only the nsaved willl have a ghost, because nothing can hurt or bother the saved, especially in the realms of the sipit world, and where do ghosts come from. Hope this helps.
P.S. science has not been able to help in the slightest n this area.

For there to be ghosts as is understood by folklore, there would need to be very specific particles. A physicist talking to a believer in ghosts would need a definition like "a creature with a human form that can pass through walls." The definition I am using here comes from "Einstein's Universe: Gravity At Work and Play" by A. Zee.
For something to be visible, it must in some way interact with the electromagnetic spectrum - it must bounce light so our eyes perceive it. For it to pass through walls, it must not interact with the atoms of the walls, so it cannot interact with the electrons and protons there. But if it cannot interact with the atoms, then it can't do things like cool places or move things. Some have suggested that neutrino particles might possibly be able to fit the bill, but neutrinos don't interact with each other enough to form a bond and create the illusion of a human body. Also, for those who feel that these are particles that are our "soul," there are problems with how the particles are stored within the body if they do not interact with the atoms the body contains.
So that seems to answer your questions. They are made of an as yet unknown particle that interacts with known particles in much the same way as neutrinos do but which interact with one another. Those particles must not interact with the universe using the strong force, the weak force, or the gravitational force and can interact in some unusual way with the electro-magnetic force.
They are "whitish" because of the way they interact with the photons, or light, around them.
Entities that do not establish themselves as a human form but rather as patches of cold or in moving objects must be made of a different particle, capable of interacting with the electrons and protons of the universe but not interacting with gravity or light. The particles would also not be bound by the usual rules of interacting with the strong force.
The particles of either a ghost or a poltergeist must come about in an extremely unusual way, as physicists have been unable to create even one instance of such a particle in a particle accelerator and can find no mathematical evidence of them (which is another reason why they must certainly not interact gravitationally).
My best guess is that they are a phenomena of the electro-magnetic force. That means that they would be caught up in the particle world of photons. However, photons do not pass through walls. Higher energy parts of the electro-magnetic spetrum would pass through walls, but would not be visible. Other than those problems, and some of higher mathematics, I think that would be the best route to get around the problems of particles.

A Ghost is a Spirit which is a Soul the Etheric body that we use to Astral Travel so when we pass over that is what leaves the body.
It is understood as a sort of life force body or aura that constitutes the "blueprint" of the physical body, and which sustains the physical body.
Some people don't pass over because of unfinished business
Or they just don't know they have died
Or they didn't know to go to the light
This is what people call a Ghost
I call Spirit they may just be a Lost Soul
These are then Earth bound Spirits you may call Ghosts
Or sometimes family members that have past over come back to heal you when you are ill or just pop in to see how things are going in your life : )
Do you also know that people that Astral Travel are seen as ghost, so maybe people are seeing ghost maybe are just living people just exploring via Astral travelling : )
Food for thought isn't it ?
Nothing in life is to be feared, It is only to be understood.
Love & Blessings

I think that ghosts are not the ones who already died. They may be just the a visual representation of negative energy/feeling that was left before they died. For example, during wartime, the victims could have felt so much sadness and fear that's why there are rooms that seems to be depressing and scary. Some even claim that they can still smell the stench of those who perished during war. That bad event is like a video that was recorded in our time zone and continuously plays and affects us until today. The cold feeling may be caused by our senses that tell us that what we are experiencing something that is not part of our time zone anymore.

You can read about ghosts but asking for scientific explanation for something science says does not exist?
A few so called experts say they can prove ghosts exist but none are qualified scientists and experiments they make are not repeatable and therefore fail at the first hurdle of scientific reasoning.
There is a science field that can explain ghosts though - psychiatry and psychology!

Look, there doesn't have to be a "scientific" explanation for every little weird thing that happens on this Earth. Except that there might never be a scientific explanation for everything. They are just spirits that came back to Earth for some reason, and we don't have to know what they're made of. Wait, aren't they just like 'soul'.

Einstein theorized that ghosts would be made up of thin layers of energy, or something of the like. IMHO, I think ghost WOULDN'T take the form of there living counterpart; instead they would just be matters of energy, probably invisible to the naked eye. I believe this because the energy in the body while it's living s immense, formed by the brain activity etc, when someone dies, where does this go? the belief that energy never disappears, its simply changes form rings true.

There is no "scientific" explanation as per three dimensional physics. Ghosts and spirits are not limited by the 3 dimensions.
