It's a twist on something John Donne said: No man is an island. Donne was making the comment that no man exists entirely alone, and that all of humanity is connected by the mere fact that we are human. What affects one of us affects us all.

To say that every man is his own island is to posit the exact opposite, and claim that everyone is alone, and that there really is no human connection, other than the fact that we are human beings. It means that each person's experiences are felt and understood only by him or herself, and that we don't share anything with others simply because we are all human.

The first one says that what affects you also affects me--when you are hurt, so am I, because we are both human. The second says that since we are both isolated, when you are hurt, it has no bearing on me, because while we are both human, we are separate in every other way. It is a more cynical take on what it means to be human.

I think they are talking about balding men with an island on their heads. LoL, just kidding.

I think it means you are your own island in that you govern what happens on this island. Your actions, your words, your thoughts shape this island of yours. The consequences are of your own doings. You are responsible for your actions. You are the boss of your island.

I thought it was: No man is an island (meaning, no one can really make it on their own)

I think the quote is "no man is an island unto himself". What that means is that all our lives are inextricable one from the other. What you do never affects just you and so the results of your actions change everything. So ask not for whom the bell tolls (funeral bells), it tolls for thee.

We are the source of our dimensional reality - our experience. Although we are all interconnected, reality mirrors the contents of consciousness and our learned egoic belief system controls not only our perception - but the actual limited experience of reality.
