You can look at his views like Obama's on gay marriage. Obama didn't support it until he thought he could without endangering his other agenda items that he felt were more important. He may have actually had a change of heart as well, but that's not so certain. Likewise, Lincoln's first priority was not to end slavery but to save the Union, i.e. keep America as one country. He didn't want to fight a civil war, but it was forced on him. Saving the Union was also the main motivation of most Northerners who supported the war, too. Emancipation was not very popular, so he put off the Emancipation Proclamation until the Union had won a major victory, which gave him political cover. Lincoln also seems to have had a change of heart on the importance of ending slavery, although he wasn't a strict abolitionist before he was elected president. Fredrick Douglass was important in changing his mind. The Emancipation Proclamation did not directly free any slaves because it was a POLITICAL document. It was intended to show any European countries that might sympathize with and aid the Confederates that he was trying to be fair and end the war, even though he knew that the South would never accept the end of slavery. Because the South rejected it, those other countries became less likely to get involved. Also, making the war about slavery made opinion in those countries, especially England, more pro-Union. It also meant that the border states that still allowed slavery (like Maryland) would remain loyal. Lincoln didn't want any of them to join the Confederacy, and allowing them to (temporarily) keep their slaves made sure of that. Finally, there is a legal aspect. Because slaves were still legally PROPERTY according to the Constitution, Lincoln couldn't set them free within lands controlled by the Union, no matter how much he might have wanted to. You cannot take property without due process. Until slavery was made unconstitutional, slaves couldn't legally be taken away. That sounds odd, but it was actually correct under the law of the time. Of course, that was eventually a moot point, since the U.S. Constitution was amended in 1865 to make slavery completely illegal in America.

No! Indian independence did not end slavery in India simply because Indian independence was merely a transfer of power from the British elite to the Indian elite. Millions of people perished during partition riots in Punjab and Bengal. In India democracy survived only because Nehru was a democrat, nothing else changed much, the atrocities of the privileged classes over the illeterate and poverty stricken masses continued unabated. Today we have reached the nadir of political depravity as criminals have very strongly taken the political power in their grip. In such a grave scenario all this hype about India being a superpower is nothing but white lies. India is amongst the most corrupt country in the world and there is no redemption in sight unless people revolt against such rampant injustice there is no chance that our country can progress in the true sense of the term. But first of all if people truly wish to bring about a social change they will have to bring about a change in themselves first and if it is not done our country will plunge into anarchy and a bloody civil war very soon.

You seem to be utopian. Independance from the British rule was the political phenomena. It has nothing to do with slavery, which is a social nuisance.

YES India got independence but Indian political leaders misusing the freedom. Human being know how to FLY and SWIM, but don't know how to WALK as human. One should understand the other. One should help other and uplift one another. We should avoid selfishness.

it was british then, it's our greed now, our corruption. i'm not mentioning politics, 'coz they are also one of us. if they are corrupt, so are we, if they are greedy, so are we, if they are evil, so are we. change urself, encourage others, political problems will end.
ps--- sponsor one child's education today! 90 crores people are waiting to be educated in India. With Indian education, problems will end.
