How many people in that universe had actual experience with a Jedi? Solo would have been pretty young, and heard the stories of the Jedi. But he also would have heard the Imperial propaganda, and in the end, he only trusted what he could see. He never saw a Jedi, or the Force in use, so he didn't trust in it. He did, however, see what a man with a blaster was capable of.

The galaxy is an *extremely* large place and there were never all that many Jedi, even during the height of the Republic. Most people might have *heard* of Jedi and The Force, but would never have met one.
No one *has* to believe in The Force, in any event.

He did remember the great Jedi Purge but he's a more earthy character who is more interested in getting inside the Princess's hair muffins.

According to the story, a rebel, charismatic and a kind of rogue character along with Luke Skywalker who is the believer of Force was needed. It is all about balancing this fictional story. Two believers or non-believers would have been very boring since the audience would never been find a chance to watch their arguments or funny scenes depending on their opposite natures during the movie.

Yeah but maybe he was too busy gambling and being a scoundrel and obviously the universe is a big place and he probably hadn't seen any jedi and just thought they were a myth. He obviously quietly begins to accept the force as the trilogy develops too.

He wasn't very much older than Luke, actually. Just more experienced.
