The term for Tonks, her son, and those like them is metamorphmagus. And technically anyone who changes shape without the use of a postion is a shape-shifter.

The question at hand, however, is whether or not a metamorphmagus could also be an animagus. I don't recall if it's ever mentioned in "Order of the Phoenix," onward if Tonks could become an animagus or not. Since she could so easily disguise herself, I don't see why she'd want to. Seems most of the animagus became such for the purpose of disguise.

In the books we only ever meet four living animagus (we do meet a fifth but only in the form of memories and as a spirit, not flesh and blood like the other four). These four are are Professor MacGonagall, Rita Skeeter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. Now of these four, MacGonagall and Skeeter seem to fit with what seems to be the case for most animagus. They both seem to disguise themselves for various purposes. Sirius and Pettigrew, along with James Potter, became animagus for a different reason, to be with Lupin when he became a wolf during the full moon. It seems from what is discussed in "Prisoner of Azkaban" that werewolves in wolf form only go after people, animals are safe around them. And James and Sirius became big animals so as to keep Lupin in line while a werewolf.

A metamorphmagus seems less liely to want to become an animagus as they can so easily disguise themselves. Had Tonks fallen in love with Lupin before she did, she might have wanted to become an animagus so as to be with him during the full moon. But "Chamber of Secrets" introduces a lovely little potion called the wolfsbane potion. What it does is allow the werewolf to keep their mind when they become a wolf rather than loosing it for one night to the dementia that goes along with the transformation. So Tonks would be perfectly safe with Lupin on the full moon as long as he remembers to take the potion. Something she'd be likely to make certain he'd do.

Probably not. From what I understand, a metamorphmagus can change their appearance but they'd still be another human, changing into another species is an entirely different process. A metamorphmagus is really rare, which is why some magical folk decide to become an animagus. (Apparently changing human appearances is more difficult than turning into an animal!) Tonks got top marks in concealment and disguise in her Auror training, which seems to be the same reason for becoming an animagus.

She probably could be but maybe not. Since she's already a shape shifter maybe she can't be an animagus. It's practically impossible to tell though.

Probably to a certain extent, but it wasnt explained thoroughly enough to really tell. Theoretically, if she can change her appearance, then she could turn into an animal. BUT, then again, i dont think that she can change her body shape so turning into an animal doesnt seem possible.

Probably, but I don't see why she would want to be if she was already a metamorphmagus.
