The simplest is keep a NOAA weather radio so you can hear the watches and warnings, if any (and if in the US).

Once you know a storm is coming, move things inside that aren't meant to be in the weather (kids toys, tools, certain types of outdoor furniture, your yard sale...).

Then just stay inside away from corded phones, windows, and plumbing. I usually ignore the windows part because I'm watching the storm, but you really shouldn't be close to them.

Pray to god and try to help your neighbours if you are safe.Also try to warn the people in the nearby areas through available communication channels and ask them to go for safer places.
