I live in the UK and I'm not too sure what I have done but now when I do ctrl 3 instead of the pound sign I now get the # sign and when I do ctrl 2 I now get the @ sign. Does anyone know how to change them back?

Your Keyboard has changed to English - US:

Temp Fix : Click the little EN near the clock and Choose English (United Kingdom). If it isn't there use the combination Left Alt + Left Shift until the requested result

To make English UK the keyboard to be automatically chosen at every startup:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional And Language Options > Languages Tab > Press "Details" (under Text Services and Input Languages) > Settings Tab > Select "English - United Kingdom" Under Default Input Language.
If it's not there install it with the "Add" Button.
Also, if you want to Remove English - US you can do it here.

In the bar, at the bottom right hand corner, you'll see shortcuts to some programs. To the left of that bar, you should see two letters, in a blue square. The letters are "EN". Click on the square and you will get a list of languages. Click on "English UK" and it's done. What has happened is that your language has changed to "English US" and you have a UK Keyboard. Alternatively, go to "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "Regional and Language Options" and in both the "Regional Options" and "Advanced" tabs, select "English UK".
