My mother has a lung condition, and after tests from two different doctors, they determined she is allergic to cat hair and dander. She owns two cats, an older Siamese and a younger tiger, the siamese is neutered, the tiger spayed.

I think the tiger would adapt if taken to a shelter, but the siamese would not.

Any suggstions appreciated. I an also allergic to cats, but love that siamese.

She can ask her allergist to give her shots to desensitize her to the cat dander. My allergist told me there is no reason to get rid of my pets (not that I would do it even if she had told me I HAD to), as long as you keep the dander under control...keep the house very clean, launder bedding every week in HOT water, and remove as much upholstered furniture, curtains, carpets, etc. as possible. Your mom can bathe the cats with a shampoo like Allergroom, which is formulated to help keep dander down, and spraying the cats regularly with a humectant spray like Humilac.
