A hybrid car is a vehicle that uses a combination of at least two different fuel sources for its propulsion. Although many combinations are possible, generally when people are talking about hybrid cars, they are referring to cars with a combination of

- a gasoline internal combustion engine

- an electric motor

- a battery that powers the electric motor and stores energy for future use.

Hybrid cars may also be called gas-electric hybrids.
Some examples of current hybrid cars include the Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid (HCH), and the Honda Insight

First of all, let’s start with the question of what exactly a hybrid is. In the simplest sense, it’s a vehicle that uses more than one source of power. Most locomotives are thus diesel-electric hybrids as are many city buses that draw electric power from overhead cables. In the case of hybrid cars, the two power sources are gasoline and electric power, the latter supplied by batteries.
A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is a vehicle which combines a conventional propulsion system with an on-board rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) to achieve better fuel economy than a conventional vehicle without being hampered by range from a charging unit like an electric vehicle. The different propulsion power systems may have common subsystems or components.
Hybrid cars are in fact a compromise – albeit a very good one – between conventional gas-powered cars which produce significant pollution, and electric cars, which produces almost no pollution but which have only a limited range between charges and are slow to recharge.

a hybrid is a car that can run off gas and electricity. once all electricity has worn off, you can put your car into a gear that makes your car run on gas while electricity forms again and basically while your driving you switch off. that's just a few words about hybrids, it's a alot more complicated.

A hybrid vehicle (HV) is a vehicle that uses two or more distinct power or fuel sources such as:

* An on-board rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) and a fueled power source (internal combustion engine) for vehicle propulsion
* Human or sail powered bicycle with battery assist
* A human-powered or sail boat with electric power

The term most commonly refers to Hybrid-electric vehicle (HEV) which includes internal combustion engines and electric motors (generally powered by electric batteries or other rechargeable energy storage system -RESS-). See also "Hybrid Vehicle Drivetrains" and "List of hybrid vehicles".
