For all of the persons mentioned in the answers here--I was going to put the stats for each of them. After 12 match-ups, I'm finished. I've decided that no team has a good enough defender for Timmy D.

Tim Duncan against Chris Bosh--Tim is 6-1 against Bosh.

Off the top of my head there is no one. I have no idea why Amare Stoudermire's name came up because he has not been taught defense yet. But Amare does show that sometimes a good defense is attacking on offense. Put the pressure on Tim Duncan like he puts on everyone else, attack on offense. Foul trouble is one way to slow someone down, just ask Amare. You cannot be productive if you are not in the game. To be honest, Duncan will find some way to influence the game whether on offensive or defensive end. He is most likely going to get his. Either hope he has an off night or be aggressive offensively which will hopefully tire him or get him into foul trouble.

There are many talented big man defenders in the west, but many are young and not talented enough to stop TD. The season opener will be interesting to see if Greg Oden can stop Tim Duncan. Amare Stoudimire, Yao Ming, and possibly Greg Oden (so the teams that have a good enough defender for Duncan are Phoenix, Houston, and Portland.) are the players I would want guarding Tim Duncan if I was the opposing coach.

It's not really to stop Tim Duncan the antidote to beat the Spurs. The guy averages 18 ppg now and that isn't really the stats for dominance. Great defenders and double teams has already proven to slow him down yet the Spurs still win. If you double team Tim Duncan, then he won't force it, he would patiently pass it outside to Parker, or to the slashing Ginobili or to the wide-open Bowen, Barry or even Horry at the corner for a three. You can manage to slow Tim Duncan up to 10 points in a game, but at the end, your team could still lose to the Spurs.

My point is, it's not to stop Duncan, but to stop the Spurs' system. It's the Spurs' key to success. It's not neccessarily Tim Duncan himself, he's just one of the major instruments in the system.

Finding a way to counter the Spurs' suystem is a lot harder than finding a way to stop Duncan and so far, no one still has figured out how yet.

To make it easier to understand, it's not to stop Duncan so that you could beat the Spurs, but it's to stop the Spurs the true key in stopping Duncan.

There are teams out West that have the manpower to slow Duncan a little bit:
1. Dallas Mavericks, the 2-headed center duo of Diop and Dampier who are somewhat effective (using 12 fouls between them) in slowing down Duncan.
2. Denver Nuggets, they have Marcus Camby & Nene to match-up against Tim defensively.
3. Seattle Supersonics got 2-rugged, hard-nosed power forwards in Chris Willcox and Nick Collison plus 2-tall, young centers in Robert Swift & Johan Petro.
4. Memphis Grizzlies, Pao Gasol can somewhat match Tim Duncan in offense & defense. Stromile Swift is also another option in defense.
5. LA Lakers, Chris Mihm, Andrew Bynum & Kwame Brown are physical enough but a little slow to hold Duncan in a game.

Marcus Camby of the Nuggets probably does a good job. Carlos Boozer I think. Amare? I don't think so. He always gets into foul trouble when guarding Duncan. That's the reason they got Kurt Thomas last season.

Any big men can stop the Big Fundamental (from scoring and rebounding!). But even when they stop TD,they forgot that he has 4 more teammates on the floor to score,to rebound,to make plays. He averages 13 pts per game against Seattle, but they keep on winning against the Sonics. TD once scored 8 pts.,but still Spurs won by a big margin! Stop the spurs, not TD.

Honestly I would go with Denver, Marcus Camby can give Duncan a lot of problems and Nene backs him up when fouls become a problem. No one is going to just stop Duncan, but at least they give him problems, unfortunately they have no one to stop any of their perimeter players so it doesn't do Denver a lot of good. Houston would be my 2nd choice with Yao and Mutombo guarding Duncan.

some people said Amare and while amare has improved dramatically on defense he wasnt able to cover duncan last year... but come this year TD will hit a road block in amare because amare will have the summer to prepare ... he didnt last year cuz of his knee surgery and nash with his weak side help drawing charges stops TD on a pretty regular basis

Amare no never has. Bosh not in west and not able. Dirk...please. Ming hasn't been able too. Oden...who knows. The best defenders i've seen on Tim are Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace. They are not in the west. Shaq had his days as well but also not in west. I don't think anybody stops him except himself. He clearly has done whatever he wants to do.

I honestly think Oden will be soon to give Duncan a hard time from here on out.
