It's okay to start with hope (breakfast), but towards the end of things (dinner) you better have a lot more to show than hope alone.

never heard that before but here's my take.
breakfast is the first meal of the day. you still have the whole day ahead of you. but supper is the last meal, after which there is only sleep. so if you're still "hoping" by the end of the day, chances are that whatever you were hoping for at breakfast is not going to happen.
