The idea of applied science is that that you take theoretical knowledge (e.g. the idea of evolution) and actually put it into practice (run experiments, develop new products, etc). The difference between regular and applied science is that 'regular' scientists will come up with new theories and ideas. Applied scientists will use these new theories and ideas.
