I recently got into a lot of the punk bands from the 70s.
Before that, despite only being 16, i only really listened to hard rock from the 80's, some grunge from the early 90s, and a small amount of punk from the 70s but I've now broadened my horizons to a few more bands, and found a lot of amazing music.

MetallicA ... they started in the 80s... and since they are so great they are one of the few bands of that time that continued making music...

seeing the truth about old vs modern rock music (even in hteir '03 album 'St. Anger')... their new album is gonna be an 80s sounding...

"The Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails. Hard listen but one of the greatest albums of all time.

Oh if you want to go REALLY old, probably Siouxsie and the Banshees. Great Post-Punk band.

The King Cole Trio. My grandmother left me some records. She frequented their shows at nightclubs in Long Beach back in the day.
