American is not ethnic, for America is comprised of many ethnicities. It is not a political designation, either, as we have many political parties.
Being an American is an ideology. It is an idea that all men are created equal. It is an idea that our rights are not dolled out by our Government, but they are endowed by our Creator and ~cannot~ be taken away without due process. It is an idea that any citizen may rise to power, elected by his fellow citizens. It is an idea that all men are free to do what they want, so long as no other free man is harmed in the process.

Being "American" is not political, ethnic, racial, credistic, sexual, or religious. It is a mass of people who all hold dear the idea of Freedom!

I do not think it is a political designation or an ethnic one. Being American is to originate from or, emigrate to American and become a citizen.

Everyone on two continents is an American.
An "American" as in a citizen of the United States of America is a political designation that has come to mean much more to us since our founding.

largely both cultural and geo-political, but since it is also an inherited status, it takes on a familial aspect as well, albeit on a pan-ethnic basis.
