The best thing is to watch is the "Animatrix" cartoon DVD. It explains how humans created robots that took over. The robots "harvest" the humans to supply energy (those bubbles where Neo and the others escape from). For some reason, the humans dream in their bubble/pods. This leads to the matrix being used to allow for shared dreaming that the robots can control and monitor.
The meaning of the trilogy? It means that Keanu Reeves will never have to act again unless he wants to.
