Your friends are correct. Nothing is nothing. (not something)
You may think that you can measure nothingness, like a volume of empty space, but you are actually measuring a volume with respect to your volume.
You can only measure one thing relative to another thing which is why everything is relative.

What does "nothing" refer to? Anything? By definition, no. That's the answer. It's no more complicated than that.
"Abadabica" does not refer to anything either. But when we want to point out the idea of non-referral, we do not say "abadabica;" we say "nothing." We all know what it means, RIGHT?
You are only playing a language game with yourself. "Nothing" is a word that refers quite accurately to no-thing. Since when did we come to argue over whether none is some? We do have working definitions for these simple words! If nothing was something then it would also be the case that sometihng could be true and false at the same time. You could throw out the window any connection with reality, and any way to discuss reality in a meaningful fashion.

Nothing means nothing and that is all. If you use the word meaning something then it is being used in place of a much better word.
People often say, I don't have nothing. Meaning they do not have anything and that is a Miss use of the word. Don't have nothing literally means you have something. Nothing still means nothing though. It is the other word that has the other that gives the something to nothing.
If you weren't confused before you sure are now.

yes it does depend on the context and how the person says it. Sometimes people say nothing for a reason. We must try to read between the lines sometimes

What makes something, something? Does it have to exist? Then what makes something exist? Does something conscious have to be there to witness it?
What makes nothing, nothing? Is it non-existence? Does something conscious have to be there to witness it?
If by nothing you mean non-existence in general then, no, non-existence cannot technically exist. Non-existence is the absence of existence, in that sense. But absence is only relative to presence and there cannot be non-existence and existence at the same time, can there?
If by nothing you mean the absence of a specific something among many other somethings then, yes "nothing" can exist.
So it really depends on the context and definition of "something" and "nothing."

nothing is something because its a word and a word is something..... but the nothing in reality is still something because it takes up space. Like when someone says "Man, were in the middle of nowhere" But what do they stand on? sand, a something.....

Nothing is just a concept. An idea...! But, it is most definitely not something! You are all just confusing something's definition with its actual essence, value or state.

Think of dark matter and dark energy and thoughts and photons and neutrinos and consciousness, and bodies and love.
There is no one or the other. The universe, and we within it, are spectral in nature. There are no contradictions except those we create in our limited brains.

Yes, as something is nothing. One can make something out of nothing and nothing out of something. So in essence, what is nothing to someone, is something to someone else and vice-versa. It all depends what you want to make out of it.

Nothing is something. Yes is no. Good is evil. Sweet is sour. Up is down. Life is death. Eieio. What's your frame of reference? Don't tell me, I don't care. Love is hate. Water is fire. Music is noise. Male is female. um... beef jerky. yeah.
