Look on your keyboard...
Over by the right shift key you will see the pipe | and the broken bar (thats what these two keys are called) then to use the broken bar or the pipe, press shift and that key,
OR
If your's is above the ENTER key do the same there, as different keyboards have them in different places.

On the right side of the keyboard
the key below backspace
there is a key with
| on top, and
\ on the bottom
To type a |, press the shift key + \
