I took 2 pairs of pants and 2 skirts to my tailor for alterations. The pants needed the waists taken in and the skirts needed hems. When the tailor pinned each item they seemed fine but now that I have them home they are all wrong! The waists are too tight and one is crooked. One skirt is all lumppy on the bottom and the other is much shorter than was pinned.

I went back for a refund but they refuse! The work cost me nearly 85 dollars and I can't wear any of it!

Is there anything I can do to recoup my money? At this point I've lost the cost of each item and the 85$ for the alterations. Please help!

Did you sign an agreement at any time that says he is NOT responsible?

If not, threaten him to take this to court or the better business bureau. Don't be afraid to take action, either. Not only should he refund you, but he should give you money for the value of the clothes, as they are no longer wearable.

ask them to re-do the alterations and show them where they messed up... if that doesnt work find out if they are a franchise and who ownes them or a manager of the store. Talk to the "higher up" and see what can be done.. if nothing else you could write bad revies of them (look for the business online at places like yahoo locol or even report them to the better business bureau ( you can find them online). I would say however if you talk to them and they still refuse to help you out or right their wrongs then calmly and in a "professional" manner tell them it bothers you and why and let them know you will no longer be a customer and that you will be giving them very bad recommendations. Many places will "break" and suddenly find a solution for the problem because they dont mind if they loose one customer but they dont want to loose a lot of customers. Especially if they are a locally run business . Chances are if you are a person who wears business or dress clothing a lot and have it altered there then it is safe to assume that you work with others who may have their clothing altered there. If they piss off one person at say a law office- there are maybe 10 other people working there who may get theier clothes altered there also... So that would be a greater loss than just you. If you go back to the shop bulligerant however, you will be less likely to "get what you want". I have worked in this type of environment (where the public is our number one priority) and it does not pay to be rude about it. Good luck

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do at this point, when you pay an individual for their time and skills you take a gamble because it may or may not turn out exactly as expected, especialy if the price was agreed apon beforehand. What you can do however is lodge a polite complaint, and take your buisness elsewhere.

1] talk to manager. How much business does your family do there?
2] call Better Business Bureau
3] consider a lawyer
Always bring a friend with you for alterations, and check in the mirror twice.
