People invented heaven first. Heaven is a symbol of hope for those who feel tormented during their lives. Hell was created as an afterthought as punishment to other people who behaved in an ethically unbalanced way. Hell was where everybody else went.

In a way you can say people create their own hell here on earth by their foolish choices, but the real heaven and hell will be like nothing you can imagine, so I doubt man could have ever thought it up on their own. Even the greatest scholars can't hold a candle to the writings in the Bible, it's a literary masterpiece, everything co insides and still encompasses our lives and is pertinent no matter how advanced we think we are. There is nothing new under the sun, we as humans keep making the same stupid mistakes, we should be ever grateful we have such a forgiving God, and stop trying to analyze Him out of our lives when we need Him so much, especially now.

I don't think it's a matter of people inventing Heaven or Hell, but I believe Heaven existed first. Lucifer (the devil) is one of God's fallen angels and when he rose up against God and lost, he was banished from Heaven. If he had not been banished from Heaven, there might not be a Hell. Hope that helps some.

"Hope springs eternal in the human breast." When the first hominid recognized that people die and he was going to die too, his hope fabricated a realm where his loved ones and his loved self went when they were physically gone. It is almost impossible to imagine ones non existence. The Neanderthals buried their dead with flowers.
From the Egyptian civilizations land of the dead to the East and West of the Nile to the Norse Valhalla and the Hebrew Sheol etc. all civilizations have had an imaginary realm for the dead..
People also hate and are prejudiced against others who are different (especially those who believe they are the "chosen ones") so it was necessary to invent a place for hated ones to go so they wouldn't contaminate their ideal ideas of heaven So heaven and hell were imaginatively invented.
I'm no different in being unable to imagine my own nonexistence. Even though i "die" for all practical purposes whenever I go to sleep I always awaken in the morning; it is natural. Therefore I too have learned to have hope there is something beyond the grave (but I refuse to try to imagine what)..
Good luck in your "heaven", good health, peace and love!

Probably heaven. From the need of something better to go to...if anywhere at all since back in those days life was so damn harsh!
However, the idea of hereafter having a positive or negative aspect is sort of new. Most early societies just viewed it as a next step in a path of existence!
In our modern western views of such ideas heaven definitely came first.

God created the heavens ad the earth. Heaven was first. He had to put Satan somewhere when he was cast out of heaven, so that is how we got Hell. Remember Satan, was first an Angel, that got too besides himself, got big headed, egotistical , and evil.

It was not invented. Stories were told to teach and pass down knowledge. Some... perhaps were true. The moral of the story is what matters.

Yes, because Cave Men were prone to using CAVE MAN logic to explain the unknown universe. Modern man uses scientific and logical explanations....or at least you would think so....
