I live in L.A and it's too damn hot here (and expensive) I know northern CA is a lot cooler (temp wise) but the SF is just as expensive, I've noticed some areas like Vallejo and Concord are affordable, but I've heard bad things, please recommend areas north of L.A that are not as hot and more affordable.
Thanks!

Affordable and Bay Area don't go together. It depends on how much is your budget. A 1BR/1BA apartment in SF for 2500 per month in SF is affordable! LOL. I think you shoul commute.. everyone does. Like other answerers Livermore and Pleasanton are good places. They are kinda of expensive too though. Modesto is a good town, about an 1 and a half away from SF without traffic, 2-3 with. East Bay has some nice places EXCEPT Oakland. The penninsula in the Bay Area is the BEST place to live San Matero, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Atherton, but AGAIN EXPENSIVE. San Jose is a big city and living is pretty cheap, housing and rent aren't too up there either. There are these apartments called Avalon Rosewalk in San Jose (look on internet) in a nice area close to freeways and downtown, all amenities pool, gym ,etc. you can get a 1400 sq ft 3 BR/B Ba for $2300 per month, thats pretty cheap.

Look for towns on the peninsula or in the South Bay. I live in SF now, but I lived for a time in Mountain View, which has great weather and is pretty affordable, especially compared to SF or LA. Some other towns I know are affordable: Redwood City, Sunnyvale, parts of San Jose.

Please don't even think of Vallejo. It's dirty and too much crime. Napa's nice. A nice 3 BR apt. was $1100 for me. And there's cheaper too, like a lot of homeowners have mother in law cottages in back of their house. A 10 minute trip to Vallejo and you can be on a 45 minute ferry to SF. A lot of people here commute to SF for work. But the best part is that it's like a small town. People are friendly, relaxed, things to do, I wouldn't ever leave here.

Pleasanton is about 30 min east (kind of like Ontario area to L.A) and is modest in price. Modesto (Scott Peterson's home town- you know the story... is about an hour east and actually a nice suburban area kind of like a spread out Pasadena/Glendale..Good luck and good for you chances are it'll be better and cooler
