James Srodes, who wrote the book you are referring to, is a good writer and a big fan of Franklin. The book is well-regarded, but not necessarily *essential*! BIggest plus is that Srodes uses papers previously unavailable. The main criticism you'll hear is that it does not adequately cover the "negative side" of Franklin.

For more substance I would:
1) read the book, esp if that's your assignments
2) check out some book reviews -- by looking up the book on Amazon, com, and by a web search using the title and the author's name

Read any of the newer books about his life and you will find out that in any Gathering he would have been regarded as the most amazing man in the room.

I am not sure which book you refer to but I suggest you do some research yourself, there is so much about him that all you need to do is copy and paste
