U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt negotiated the peace treaty (the Treaty of Portsmouth) between Japan and Russia that ended the war between the two countries. The negotiations were held in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and the treaty was signed on September 5, 1905. For his efforts, Roosevelt was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906.

An interesting bit of trivia is that at one point, while the negotiations weren't going well, Roosevelt ordered a submarine to come to Portsmouth, and became the first President to descend in the new type of naval vessel. He did this in order to make sure newspaper headlines the next day reported this event, rather than the difficulties he was having negotiating a peace.
