& that if you make a wish out loud, it won't come true?

It might be a reflection of an old theory of magic. In order to work magic, a mage needs to be able to do four things: To know, to will, to dare, and to keep silent. You must know how to do the magic, have a strong enough will to do it, dare to do it--and keep it secret. Why? The theory is that if you talk about it, you disperse the intention into the mundane world, where your wish doesn't have as much power. If you keep it to yourself, it has more potency.

Just think about the last time you heard something really cool but had promised not to tell anyone--didn't it just EAT AWAY at you? That's the power of silence.
