I feel that "American Dad!" is derivative. It feels as if they took "Family Guy", boiled it down to its basic formula--an intellectually and morally ambiguous father, a promiscuous straight-woman mother, a socially "different" daughter that her parents can't understand (especially her dad), an awkward son, an alcoholic pet/drinking buddy, and a masochistic, self-serving baby (which, to keep the illusion of having the ideal family of two kids, was played by a talking fish)--and cast it with a WASP family from Northern Virginia. As "The Simpsons" classically pointed out, it's a plagiarism of a plagiarism.

I feel that the story lines that "American Dad!" put out are rejects from "Family Guy"--and short of the inspired Patrick Stewart cameos--offer nothing new to the table. It didn't have to be that way; "American Dad!" could have been so much more, but it is limited by its characters (although, begrudgingly, I kind of like Roger) and its formulaic structure.

Family Guy is so much funnier than American Dad. To me American Dad is a bad rip off of Family Guy.

They're both made by the same guy, so you can't consider them rip offs of each other. But even as a guy who loves political jokes, I like Family Guy more.

I personally still watch them both: Family Guy offers the mindless loveable comedy, but American Dad is constructive with a more current theme of politics. And even though I love a George Bush joke and Vasectech, I love Family Guy its mindless violence and its twisted view on the American family.

I think it takes a person that listens and a person who is into politics to understand American Dad's jokes. Family Guy is definitely just flat out funny, for anyone. I don't see how anyone can watch an episode and not laugh, the humor is easy.
