Calories are not the fuel. Calories are the measurement of the fuels ability to raise the bodies core temperature. The body does have a fuel its called oxygen. Breathing is the essential fuel. In automotive terms oxygen would be the primary fuel source. Water would be the equivalent to coolant and food would be the equivalent to oil. Sleep would be the equivalent to transmission fluid and work would be the equivalent of a crack in the block.
