Say you live in an apartment building with no one in the building has roaches, but your apartment is a mess. How do roaches come about? Let's assume you didn't carry any home on your feet or anything and your neighbors don't have any, how do people get roaches initially?

For the record, I don't have roaches, I'm just wondering how they come about to make sure I don't get them.

If your apartment is a mess, presumably the smell can attract them.
Roaches DO live out in the wild after all. They scurry about from place to place. And then they smell the wonderful aroma of rotten things in your apartment and decide to move in.

Shopping bags, other people.
It only takes one Roach,
to have many.
It can be hard to get rid of them in an
apartment building.
I moved.
I packed most things in plastic trash bags.
I took a few Roaches with me anyway. :-(
I sprayed the new apartment with Raid.
Whenever I walked into a darken room
I would turn the light on, and look around
the room for Roaches.
By doing this, I killed a total of 13 Roaches.
That was it, all done in a couple of weeks.
So it can be done.
If EVERYONE works at it.
Have your Land Lord call the Exterminator.
The entire Apartment House will have to
be sprayed.
So you know this, your apartment can be
spotless. They will come anyway.
They travel apartment, to apartment
throughout the house.

They hatch eggs. The roaches are in behind the walls of the kitchen. Put boric acid powder along the cracks and below the frig. - they like warm, moist environment down there. Don't let children or pets near it, as it is extremely poisonous to ingest, and cats may lick it off their fur. It dries' the insides out of the roaches, and the powder is brought back to the rest by it clinging on to their disgusting bodies. Cover dishes in drain board- better yet, put away in closely closed cabinets. Cover all cereals and dry goods tightly, and don't leave even a particle of food or bar soap- they eat it, plus book glue, too- basically, you need the boric acid!
They come through any of the belongings of other people and places you go, people that move out, and these things can live even if their head is cut off. But you can drastically reduce their numbers if you are very quick and thorough in your efforts. Don't over-do the boric acid- just place it near food sources and snack areas, but never next to or on places that you prepare food, or near food.

Roaches can come in from anywhere. Many supermarkets are infested with them, so it stands to reason the paper bags you tote your groceries home in might have one or two. That's why I use plastic.
They also can come in with boxes of envelopes that you lick and stick (they're attracted to the glue), old newspapers you've collected from other people who might have roaches, in your luggage if you stay in a hotel or house with roaches, in cookbooks and other books if you buy them from a thrift store, in secondhand furniture especially appliances... and the list goes on.

the glue that holds boxes together is an attractant, and the glue that sticks paper bags and wood shingles. Also glue used in making trailer homes. Recently my neighbors moved out and they were getting it ready to rent again, pulled out the carpet and all, and we started seeing roaches, but we killed every one we saw and I haven't seen one for about a month. Don't allow eating in bedrooms because food will get behind furniture, clean, clean. And I prayed about it too.

I've been told that you can sometimes get roaches by leaving out food.

If you did not bring them with you then they were there and I find it hard to believe others do not have them. If it were me I would call an exterminator. They are nasty critters.
